B. Let's Read

Activity 3

Let's read a story entitled "The Sacred Stone." The story has two parts: The Sago Trees and The Tradition. Now, you will read the first part of the story. While reading, highlight the structure of a legend and its language features as listed in the Table. 

Orientation

Once upon a time, two villages were on top of the beautiful Kamboi Rama mountain: Kamboi Rama and Aroempu. Kamboi Rama was a residence for the
Kamboi people, and Aroempu was a sago plantation owned by God Iriwonawani. He had a magical tool called Tifa. It could bring the people together in times of trouble. 

Complication

Sago trees provided a unique food that villagers enjoyed. But one day, their peaceful life was disturbed.
Every day, they chopped the sago tree, cooked it, ate it, then cut another tree, cooked it, and did it repeatedly. They overate sago without considering its origin. They did not realize that the sago trees were endangered. It left the forests sad and empty.

The once-green forests turned dry and empty, and the villagers became sad and worried. They indeed upset God Iriwonawani because the villagers did not care
for nature. They did not listen to the warnings, even when his Tifa called them to work together. But the villagers were too scared and sad to hear.

Resolution

Because they felt scared, the villagers inally decided to leave their homes. They went to the coast. They changed their name from Kamboi Rama to Randuayaivi. They hoped to escape from God Iriwonawani’s anger. However, they knew God Iriwonawani would still be watching over them. At last, this situation made them realize they needed to be more careful in the future.

Coda

They brought their mistakes with them to their new home on the coast. They promised to relect on how their actions affected others. They worked daily to
rebuild community and peace by following God Iriwonawani's lessons. They believed working together and valuing nature would improve things for everyone.
